DIGITAL DUDE
Early Days
Ever since I was but a wee lad growing up in my namesake, Scotland, I have wanted to work in web design and digital marketing. O’ to look over the lochs and highlands and dream of a digital life.
Okay, I made that up. What I really wanted was to be in a rock band and chase the success of my then heroes, Van Halen or Rush! My parents supported my hobby but also encouraged pursuing a career path in something with a higher likelihood of keeping a roof over my head.
I spent many years in various sales and management roles. During that time, I became interested in graphic design. I had always an appreciation of visual art and print advertising, and since I was always in need of sales collateral, I found myself designing my own material. As I learned design software, I discovered that I enjoyed designing more than selling.
Second Career
Graphic design naturally transitioned into building websites on the side for friends and family. Before long, I was doing freelance web work and eventually landed some great (and some not-so-great) full time positions.
For the last 10 years or so, I have been part of a team that manages the website for a major healthcare system. I have been extraordinarily happy in this role, and have no plans to make a change, though I occasionally take on a freelance client as long as there are no conflicts.
What about the rock star?
I’m still playing in a “dad band” with my friends — mostly jamming in the spare room, and occasionally playing a bar or private event.
If a pretty poster and a cute saying are all it takes to motivate you, you probably have a very easy job. The kind robots will be doing soon.
